How Much Does a California Elopement Cost?
Eloping in California? Here's what to budget for a beautiful, intimate wedding experience, with or without a venue.
How Much Does a California Elopement Cost?
Eloping in California offers a breathtakingly intimate way to say "I do." The choice of different landscapes and backdrops fits anybody's vibe. Keeping in mind "Why" you decided to elope in the first p[place, you need to stay at the very top of your planning—the intimacy, whether just the two of you or with your closest humans. The experience you envision and the memories you want to create will all matter.
We all know that an elopement can be a more cost-effective alternative to a large wedding, but a well-planned, quality elopement still comes with expenses that we need to break down realistically. So here's a detailed breakdown of what you can expect to budget for a mid-to-high-end elopement experience in California.
1. Elopement Photography – $3,500 to $10,000+
Elopement photography pricing isn’t one-size-fits-all—it depends on your unique vision and what your photographer brings to the table. My goal? To do more than just take photos. I help couples craft their dream elopement experience, from planning timelines to choosing the perfect locations, so your day flows seamlessly and feels just right.
Since you’ll be spending much of your elopement with your photographer, it's important to find someone you genuinely vibe with! That’s why I always hop on a call with my couples before booking to ensure we’re the perfect fit for your day.
So, what’s the cost? Elopement photography packages that are catered for a full experience, half day or full day, or multiple days can range from $3,500 to $10,000+, depending on experience, the level of coverage, and what’s included (like extra sessions or travel).package inclusions (such as film photography, multiple locations, or additional hours). You can see my elopement packages & pricing here.
I don't need to preach how important capturing your stills is! I offer packages and fully customized experiences, but we are not one-size-fits-all. Contact me for Pricing HERE.
2. Videography – $2,500 to $6,000+
An experienced elopement videographer can document your intimate ceremony cinematically, capturing vows, landscapes, and emotions in motion. Expect to spend between $2,500 and $6,000+ for professional videography, depending on the complexity of coverage, drone footage, and editing style. I offer videography with a drone ( where allowed) for all elopements. You can see our packages here.
3. Florals – $350 to $1,200+
Even in a small elopement, flowers add a romantic touch. A lush, quality bridal bouquet typically costs $300 to $600. At the same time, additional florals—such as a boutonnière, floral hairpiece, or ceremony arrangements—can increase the cost to $1,200 or more. *Note that this includes delivery, artistic creativity, design, and the costs of flowers/greens, ribbons, and the artist's time. I work closely with professional florists whose quality work and professionalism speak for themselves.
4. Officiant – $400 to $1,000+
Hiring a professional officiant ensures a personalized, meaningful ceremony. Some officiants charge $400 to $1,000+, depending on whether they create custom vows, travel to remote locations, or handle legal paperwork. I work closely with a handful of women officiants. Still, I also offer to be a witness, and I can sign your marriage license as I am ordained. But I do not perform ceremonies. I like to concentrate on ONE job: capturing your love through my lens. I understand if you say your vows and need paperwork signed.
5.Permits, Licenses & Insurance
Marriage License: The cost of a marriage license in California is approximately $90.
Event Permits: As mentioned, certain locations require permits. This can range from $50 to $500 depending on the location
Insurance: If you are renting private property for your elopement or intimate wedding, they may require you to have event insurance. Event liability insurance can range from $75 to $250.
6. Hair & Makeup – $300 to $800+
A professional hair and makeup artist will help you feel and look your best on your wedding day. Expect to pay $300 to $800+, depending on the stylist's experience, location, and whether they provide on-site touch-ups. I have a handful of incredible artists I recommend and work closely with.
7. Accommodations – $300 to $1,500+ per night
Many couples in 2025 opt for weekend mini-vacation/retreats and choose a scenic Airbnb, a boutique hotel, or a luxury resort to enhance their elopement experience. When selecting your accommodations, consider the travel time to your desired ceremony location, potential traffic, parking options, and the day of the week, as these factors will influence your experience. Weekday elopements are more cost-effective, and locations are generally less crowded. The season is crucial, so aim to book during off-peak times. For more information on the best times to elope, check my blog. Prices vary significantly by location, with coastal and mountain Airbnbs typically ranging from $300 to $1,000+ per night. In contrast, luxury resorts like Big Sur or Napa Valley can reach prices of $1,500+ per night.
8. Transportation – $200 to $1,000+
Depending on your location, you may need to rent a car, book a driver, or even hire a private 4x4 for off-the-grid locations. Rental cars typically cost $200 to $500
9. Permit Fees – $125 to $500+
Many outdoor locations in California require elopement permits, particularly in national and state parks. Permit costs range from $100 to $500+, depending on the location and number of guests. I can assist and guide you through the process or apply for permits.
10. Elopement Attire Costs
Elopement attire can be as simple or extravagant as you like:
Wedding Dress: $500 to $2,000+
Suit/Tuxedo: $200 to $500+
Other attire costs: 1 or more pairs of shoes, maybe an extra pair that’s comfortable to hike in and then a nice pair for photos or your ceremony. Hairpieces, veils, cufflinks, and jewelry should be budgeted for too if you’re planning to have them!
11. Miscellaneous & Adventure Experiences – $500 to $5,000+
Many eloping couples choose to add a unique experience to their day, such as:
Meals: for your whole trip-day/weekend - Depending on your preferences, dining costs can vary a lot from fast food to fine dining.
Tips: If you’re tipping your vendors, make sure to budget for that too.
A private chef dinner ranging anywhere from $50 p/p to $250 p/p (eg: 15 guests total at $150 p/p -$2,250)
A hiking or helicopter tour ($500 to $2,000+)
This, again, will depend on what kind of experience you want, and costs will vary.
More factors to consider for your elopement budget:

Total Average Cost of a Mid-to-High-End California Elopement can cost anywhere from:
The average cost of an elopement in California can be anywhere from $10k-20k+. This may sound like a lot, but keep in mind the average cost of a wedding in the US is $30k+. Most of that money gets spent on the venue, which can be as much as $10k. With elopements, you are more than likely avoiding this! $8,000 to $20,000+ (varies based on location, vendors, and personal preferences + budget)
Tips for Budgeting Your Costs to Elope
Tip #1: Prioritize What Matters Most
What are the non-negotiables for your elopement? Maybe it’s an amazing photographer (hi, that’s me! 😉), breathtaking florals, or a cozy Airbnb with an epic view. Figure out what’s most important to you and invest in those things first—then adjust the rest of your budget around them.
Tip #2: Budget with Some Flexibility
Plans change, unexpected costs pop up, and the last thing you want is to stress about money right before your big day. Give yourself a little wiggle room in your budget so you’re prepared for any last-minute changes and can enjoy your elopement stress-free.
Tip #3: Spend on What Feels Meaningful
Don’t book vendors or buy things just because you think you’re supposed to. This day is about YOU. Choose details and experiences that actually matter to you, not what Pinterest or other people say you "should" do. When you invest in what feels right, your elopement will be that much more special.

More Budget-Friendly Elopement Tips
Keep Your Guest List Small
One of the best things about eloping? You don’t have to invite anyone you don’t truly want there. Keep it intimate—just the two of you or a handful of your closest people. Less guests = less expenses (and less stress!).
Prioritize Experiences Over Things
Dreaming of a helicopter ride to an Alaskan glacier or a sunrise hot air balloon adventure? Go for it! If epic experiences matter more to you than flowers or a fancy dinner, shift your budget to make it happen.
Consider Alternative Lodging
Luxury hotels are nice, but if they’re not a priority, you can save big by camping, glamping, or staying in a cozy Airbnb instead!
Purchase Pre-loved or Rent Your Attire.
Instead of buying a brand-new wedding dress, you could find your dream dress at a previously loved bridal store that specializes in selling pre-loved gowns at a fraction of the cost, like Beloved Couture Bridal. You could also rent your outfit! Friar Tux specializes in men's suit rentals; you can USE CODE - AB0284 to unlock exclusive deals offered through Mariela Campbell Photography, valid for 2025 . You’ll save money and wear something stunning without the full price tag.
Elope in the Off-Season
Venues and accommodations can be so much cheaper during the off-peak months. A little flexibility in your dates could mean huge savings!
Go Digital with Invites
Sending digital invites instead of printed stationery saves money (and trees!).. and gives you more budget for the fun stuff!
Eloping is all about creating a day that feels right for YOU—without spending on things that don’t matter. So spend where it counts and cut where it doesn’t; your elopement should feel intentional, personal, and true to you. Budget wisely, plan with heart, and let’s make some magic! And let’s make your dream day happen! ✨
